Auf Wiedersehen, Y’all! Auf der Suche nach deutschen Spuren in Texas

Krause’s Café and beergarden in New Braunfels, Texas

In March of 2025, I travelled to Austin and the Texas Hill Country to continue my exploration of Texas German heritage. My short 2023 documentary piece on Texas Germans (Amis, die Deutsch sprechen) has shown that back home in Germany, there is a strong interest for this socio-cultural mix; interest undoubtedly fueled, at least in part, by the amusing and distinctive Texas German dialect.

My journey took me from Austin to Fredericksburg and across the Greater New Braunfels area, following the traces left by German settlers. Witness how echoes of history reverberate through the German heritage exhibition at the Sophienburg Museum, and discover how the Texas German dialect is preserved amid the threat of extinction through the Texas German Dialect Project at UT Austin.

Join me in learning about the heritage of Texas Germans, and how they shape the Lone Star State’s cultural mosaic from “authentic” beergardens in New Braunfels to Austin’s ‘Koblenz Karneval.’

(This project is still a work in progress and is expected to be released at the beginning of 2026.)
